About Us

Welcome to Oakland Gardening!

We are a small local business established in 2021 on the Isle of Wight by Jake Cotton & Ayshia Grigg who have a combined experience of 22 years in the gardening world.

We started gardening together when we lived abroad where we experimented with permaculture having found a house to rent with plenty of land with mature fruit trees such as pomegranates, oranges, persimmons, lemons, grapes and avocados. We created our own vegetable patch and made a chicken coup in an effort to become self sufficient due to the remote location of the house.

Jake Cotton has 14 years gardening experience who has worked for reputable companies in both Gibraltar and the Isle of Wight. He has studied with Royal Horticultural Society along with personal studies and research.

Ayshia Grigg has always been the trusted helper who has gained her knowledge and experience through on the job experience specialising in the management and maintenance of organic vegetable patches.

It doesn’t matter where we live we will always have a passion for gardening and will find a way to do it!

Since settling on the Isle of Wight in 2015 we have had the pleasure and privilege of having free rein on a 0.5 acre garden. During the past 6 years we have planted a small woodland, made 2 vegetable patches, a small orchard to house the fruit trees and chickens, landscaped the front garden, created 5 compost bays and maintained a herb / salad patch.

Our first landscaping job together

Having experience with hard landscaping, soft landscaping, traditional gardening, permaculture and no dig we have found that the gardening style that suits us best is “no dig” promoted by Charles Dowding. Having followed his work for many years and even obtaining qualifications through his online courses we find this is the easiest and most efficient way to maintain our own personal gardens.

And we can’t forget our mascot …. meet Poppy!

Whether she’s supervising our work, guarding the chickens or simply catching some sunshine she is always by our side. If you’d like her on the job just let us know!

We would love to offer our knowledge and experience to others so if you think we are the right team to help you with your dream garden please get in touch!
